August 17th seems to be a big day for car launches in India. The hotly anticipated Maruti Swift will arrive on the 17th and Volkswagen India seems to be ensuring that the new Jetta Sedan’s launch on the same day doesn’t get drowned out by the din surrounding the big ticket Maruti launch. Official communication from Volkswagen confirms that the Jetta will be launched on the 17th of August.


Bollywood Star Aamir Khan gets a new Rolls-Royce

Actor Aamir Khan got his new Rolls-Royce registered at Maharashtra’s Satara regional transport office on Saturday. People stopped by to see the shining, metallic silver new Rolls Royce when it was brought to the RTO. Deputy regional transport officer VR Gujarathi confirmed the car was Khan’s and he had requested the number ’1′,which he ultimately got but had to spend a sum of Rs 3 lakh for the number alone.

Mumbai based Navneet Motors imported the Rolls Royce from UK for Rs 1.22 crores. Customs Duty on the car amounted to Rs 1.41 crore. The Satara RTO levied a tax of Rs Rs 47 lakh for registration and a further Rs. 3 lakh for the special number. ‘MH 11 AX 1’ wasn’t viable for the four wheeler series, and has been allotted from the two wheeler series. The car has been registered in the name of Advital Post Studios Ltd and the address given is building 7D, Silver Valley Society, Khingar, taluka Mahabaleshwar.

Royal Enfield to have a new plant

Royal Enfield Motors, the two-wheeler division of Delhi-based Eicher Motors, said on Tuesday it will set up a new manufacturing facility at Oragadam near Chennai, with an initial installed capacity of 1.5 lakh units per annum, which will be on stream by March 2013.

Ford India, the Indian unit of US based leading car maker Ford India, is all set to roll-out new generation Ford Fiesta in the Indian market in the second half of July 2011. The car was previously rumored to be launched towards 10th July but the company hasn’t revealed the exact date of the launch of the car in the country.


Maruti Swift ready for launch, current model production stopped.

India’s largest carmaker Maruti has ended the production of its highly selling premium hatchback Swift, to make way for the next generation Swift, which will be launched in late August or early September.

According to reports, the car will come with 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel variants. It was reported that the new model, built on a slightly longer yet new platform, will be little extra roomy, lighter and return better mileage than the current generation Swift. Besides, engineer shave also achieved a substantial reduction in the overall weight of the car by replacing the metal fuel tank with a plastic tank. This will improve its fuel efficiency by a little over 13 per cent. This will be the first major face-lift for the Swift since it was launched six years ago. Pricing details of the new car has not been shared by the company.


Peugeot coming back to India

Peugeot is not new to the Indian market. If you remember, they earlier entered the Indian turf under collaboration with Premier Auto Limited (PAL). They had launched the 309 here, which was indeed a good car but the sales didn’t pick up and a series of unhealthy events like worker agitation meant that they had to go back.

Now French car manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroen has decided to come back and opted for Tamil Nadu over Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh for its Rs4,000 crore car plant, a government release said.
