Maruti Suzuki under pressure to hike Diesel Model prices

Autonews By: Kurian Akkara

Indian Automobile Industry and Customers had a slight relief yesterday with Government of India reducing Petrol prices from a steep rise since January 2011.

But now the Diesel sector has a bad news, not in the pricing of the fuel but with the price of the diesel car models.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car manufacturer was under pressure to rise the price of their Diesel variants due to rise in Input costs and the adverse appreciation in the Japanese currency Yen that had made imports costlier.
Maruti has hiked the prices of its diesel models by up to Rs. 10,000 with immediate effect. The prce of the Ritz hatchback has been raised by Rs. 2000, while the diesel variants of Swift Dzire and SX4 cars became costlier by Rs. 10,000.

Maruti Suzuki had a massive loss of production and consequent slide in market share this year due to labour troubles at its Manesar plant in Haryana since June that kept plant shut for 59 days. Production declined by 55 percent, profit margins declined to 4.2 percent from 6.3 percent last year.

Maruti Suzuki has seen an appreciable increase in the Diesel car sales, increasing Petrol prices is a main reason for this demand and the company officials believe that the slight increase in price of the Diesel models will not affect the customers much.
